Crane Mill (Book)
The Story of a Family, a Mill, and an American Legacy
Nearly four centuries of American history are woven through the story of one family and one remarkable place.
Crane Mill: The Story of a Family, a Mill, and an American Legacy traces the Crane family from Jasper Crane and the founding generation of seventeenth-century New England through Newark, Cranetown, Horseneck, and ultimately to the water-powered mill along Pine Brook that would carry the family name for generations.
Drawing upon colonial and town records, deeds, business ledgers, family papers, photographs, historic maps, engineering correspondence, archaeological research, surviving machinery, artwork, and firsthand memories, the book reconstructs a history that survives in remarkable detail. These sources reveal not only the Crane family, but also the communities, workers, customers, craftsmen, farmers, and neighbors whose lives intersected with the family's story across generations.
Set against the larger history of northern New Jersey and a changing America, Crane Mill is a story of migration and settlement, community and commerce, work and innovation, destruction and rebuilding, adaptation and stewardship. It follows an enterprise through nearly two centuries of Crane family stewardship while tracing a family legacy that reaches from the colonial settlements of the seventeenth century to the preservation work of the present day.
At its heart, Crane Mill is about more than one family or one mill. It is about the people who built communities, the generations who inherited both opportunity and responsibility, and the fragile ways in which history survives through documents, objects, places, memories, and the people who choose to preserve them.
It is the story of what one generation builds, what another carries forward, and what remains for those who come next.
